Every All-Wheel-Drive Toyota You Can Buy
Chicago winters make all-wheel drive the first question on a lot of test drives. The answer has changed: for 2026 Toyota offers AWD or 4WD on 17 models, from a $26,575 Corolla Hybrid to the Land Cruiser, and on several of them it is standard. Here is the full list, what it costs and what kind of system you get.
Quick answer
Toyota sells all-wheel drive on the Corolla Hybrid, Corolla Cross, Prius, Camry, Crown (standard), GR Corolla (standard), RAV4, bZ, Highlander (standard), Grand Highlander and Sienna, and four-wheel drive on the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser (standard on the last two). On the cars and crossovers AWD adds about $1,300 to $2,000 to the base MSRP and costs one to three mpg; the hybrids use an electric rear motor with no driveshaft. The trucks and 4Runner use part-time 4WD with a low range. Winter tires still matter more than the badge for stopping and steering.

Three kinds of Toyota all-wheel drive
Electronic on-demand AWD (hybrids)
Prius, Camry, RAV4, Corolla Hybrid, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Sienna, Highlander Hybrid, Grand Highlander Hybrid and Crown drive the rear wheels with a separate electric motor. No driveshaft, no transfer case; the rear motor engages when the front wheels slip or when you pull away, which is why the mpg penalty is small.
Dynamic Torque or mechanical AWD (gas)
Gas Highlander, Grand Highlander, Corolla Cross, GR Corolla and the bZ dual-motor split torque front to rear through a coupling or a second motor. Highlander and Grand Highlander gas models can also send torque left and right across the rear axle.
Part-time 4WD with low range (trucks)
Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia use a two-speed transfer case you shift into 4H or 4L. Land Cruiser is full-time 4WD with a locking center differential. These are the ones for towing a boat up a wet ramp or a forest-service road.

Expect $1,400 to $2,000 and one to two mpg on the hybrids. Gas trucks give up more, and the 4Runner and Tacoma pay it on every tank, not just when the roads are bad.
Before you decide
- AWD helps you get moving and keeps the car straight under power. It does not shorten stopping distances; winter tires do. A front-drive Camry on winter tires out-brakes an AWD Camry on all-seasons.
- If the car lives in a garage and drives plowed city streets, a hybrid's on-demand AWD is the right amount. If you tow or leave pavement, look at the 4WD trucks.
- AWD versions carry a few hundred pounds more and a slightly higher ride height; check the payload if you fill a Sienna or Grand Highlander with people and luggage.
- The RAV4, Crown, Highlander and Land Cruiser come with AWD or 4WD either standard or on every trim, so you can shop those by trim first and not worry about finding the right drivetrain in stock.

Does every Toyota Camry have AWD?
AWD is available on every 2027 Camry trim, LE through XSE, for about $1,525 over the front-drive version. It is not standard.

Yes. Every 2026 Highlander, gas or hybrid, is all-wheel drive.

Does Toyota AWD hurt gas mileage?
On the hybrids, by one to two mpg combined; the rear electric motor only runs when needed. Gas SUVs and trucks give up two to three mpg.
