This June, the MIT Technology Review released its yearly list of the world's 50 Smartest Companies. In the top half of the rankings, and one of only two automakers to be honored -- Toyota.
According to the Intellectual Property Owners Association, Toyota was awarded 1,636 patents in 2015, more than any other automaker. That rapid-fire innovation is part of the reason Toyota stands out among other automakers, spurring innovation by dedicating big investments, and even a new company to scientific research.
The Toyota Research Institute opened January 2016, and currently has three facilities -- one on the west coast, collaborating with Stanford University, one near the University of Michigan, and one on the east coast, collaborating with MIT itself.
It is possible the technology institute is playing favorites with its new research partner, but then how many automakers can claim to be working with a world-class academic institution to develop artificially intelligent machines?
The MIT Technology Review also pointed toward Toyota's development of the hydrogen-fueled Mirai as another reason for being considered one of the world's smartest companies.
