Don’t get caught with a breakdown in the middle of winter! Here are some simple winter vehicle maintenance tips that can help you reduce your chances of minor issues becoming big problems at the worst possible time:
The Basics
- Get your oil and oil filter changed on schedule to protect your engine and help it run more efficiently.
- Have a service professional check your battery to make sure it isn’t weak.
- Get your brakes inspected to make sure they’re wearing properly.
- Check your heat and defrost systems to make sure they’re operating correctly.
- Follow the service intervals recommended in your vehicle’s manual for all basic maintenance.
Winterize Your Vehicle
- Replace your windshield wiper blades, preferably with the rubber-clad “winter-style” type designed to combat ice and snow.
- Make sure you have an ice scraper (or two) in your vehicle.
- Stock up on windshield wiper fluid so you have plenty on hand when you need a refill.
- Get your tires checked for tread life, uneven wear, and inflation.
- Keep your gas tank as full as possible so moisture can’t form inside the fuel line, and add a bottle of fuel de-icer fluid to your gas tank once a month to keep any moisture from freezing.
- Stash an emergency kit in your trunk with extra gloves, blankets, boots, snacks, and water. A flashlight with extra batteries, a small shovel, and sand or kitty litter (for icy roads) are also vital. Consider tire chains and an extra cell phone and charger, as well.
Evaluate Other Systems
Your vehicle’s other major systems should also be checked to make sure they’re in good working order. These include your cooling system, exhaust system, lights, filters, and transmission. You want to prevent any breakdowns, especially in a cold, dark, unsafe situation. If you’ve noticed any unusual issues like stalling, sudden reduction in power, rough idling, etc., then definitely see a service professional to get them repaired before winter gets into full swing.
