Every 2027 gas version is rated 1 to 2 mpg lower in the city than its 2026 counterpart, and the SE and XSE versions are 1 mpg lower combined; the Corolla Hybrid ratings did not change. If you are shopping a 2026 Corolla, its window sticker shows the 2026 figures.

Two powertrains

The gas Corolla (LE, SE and XSE) uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that toyota.com lists at 169 hp at 6,600 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm, with a Dynamic-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive.

The Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine (96 hp, 105 lb-ft) with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Toyota.com lists hybrid system net horsepower of 138. The Hybrid LE and Hybrid SE are offered with front-wheel drive or Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive; the Hybrid XLE is listed with front-wheel drive.

Toyota.com lists curb weights from 2,955 lb (LE) to 3,150 lb (XSE) for the gas Corolla and from 2,850 lb (Hybrid LE FWD) to 3,250 lb (Hybrid SE AWD) for the Corolla Hybrid. In its ratings, the Hybrid LE with FWD is rated 3 mpg higher combined than the Hybrid SE with FWD (50 versus 47), and the gas LE 2 mpg higher than the SE and XSE (35 versus 33).

Toyota.com lists a hybrid battery warranty of 120 months or 150,000 miles and a hybrid system warranty of 96 months or 100,000 miles on every 2027 Corolla Hybrid grade. This guide covers the Corolla sedan, gas and hybrid. The Corolla Hatchback has its own EPA listings, and the figures on this page do not apply to it.

How far can a Corolla go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists a 13.2-gallon fuel tank on the gas Corolla and 11.3 gallons on every Corolla Hybrid. Multiplied by the combined ratings, that gives a rough range of about 462 miles for a gas LE (13.2 x 35) and about 436 miles for an SE or XSE (13.2 x 33).

For the Corolla Hybrid it works out to about 565 miles for a Hybrid LE FWD or Hybrid XLE (11.3 x 50), about 542 miles for a Hybrid LE AWD (11.3 x 48), about 531 miles for a Hybrid SE FWD (11.3 x 47) and about 497 miles for a Hybrid SE AWD (11.3 x 44).

That is our arithmetic from the published ratings, not a range figure from Toyota or the EPA. Speed, temperature, load and trip length all change real-world range.

Why your Corolla's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles typically see a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids 20% to 40% and 25% to 45%. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read October 29, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%, with smaller vehicles affected more than larger ones.
