Toyota Camry vs. Toyota Avalon: What Changed and What to Buy
Toyota built the last Avalon for the 2022 model year, and the Crown took its place as the larger, more premium sedan. So the Camry-or-Avalon question now has three answers: a new Camry, a used Avalon, or a new Crown. Here is how they line up.

Quick answer
The Avalon was Toyota's full-size sedan: a 301-hp V6 or a 215-hp hybrid, leather and a quieter, larger cabin than the Camry of its day. Toyota discontinued it after the 2022 model year. Today's Camry is hybrid-only, 225 or 232 hp, rated up to an EPA-estimated 51 mpg combined, with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and a 12.3-inch display available. The 2027 Crown is the Avalon's replacement: standard AWD, a 40-mpg hybrid or a 340-hp Hybrid MAX, with a higher seating position. Buy a new Camry for efficiency and the newest tech, a used Avalon for V6 power and space at a lower price, or a Crown for Avalon-style comfort with current technology.

Avalon figures are Toyota's for the final generation; 2022 carried over the 2021 powertrains. Crown figures are from Toyota's July 2026 release.
Why the Avalon ended
Toyota confirmed in 2021 that the Avalon would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, while saying it remained committed to sedans. The Crown arrived for 2023 as a taller hybrid sedan with standard AWD, and the Camry was redesigned for 2025 as a hybrid-only car with more of the Avalon's refinement built in. The last Avalons were built at Toyota's Kentucky plant, the same plant that builds the Camry.
Buying a used Avalon
- The 2019-2022 generation has the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite standard, Apple CarPlay from 2019 and Android Auto from 2020.
- The V6 is the one to choose for power; the hybrid XLE is the one for economy at 43-44 mpg. AWD came only with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder from 2021.
- A Toyota Certified Used Vehicle adds a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 160-point inspection. What Toyota Certified includes.
- Avalon Hybrid batteries carry the same 10-year/150,000-mile warranty from the original in-service date on 2020 and newer models.
If you liked the Avalon, look at the Crown
The Crown matches what Avalon owners valued: a quiet cabin, a long wheelbase and standard leather on most grades. It adds all-wheel drive on every grade and a seating position several inches higher than a Camry's. For 2027 the XLE, Limited and Nightshade move to Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system with an EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined, and the Platinum keeps the 340-hp Hybrid MAX. Limited now includes Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist and Digital Key.
