How often should I change the oil in my Toyota?

Toyota's 2026 Warranty & Maintenance Guides list replacing the engine oil and oil filter every 10,000 miles under normal driving. The Camry, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Tacoma and Tundra guides add a 12-month limit. If most of your driving falls under the special operating conditions in your guide, such as dirt or dusty roads or repeated short trips in freezing weather, Toyota says to change the oil and filter at 5,000 miles or six months, regardless of the oil used.

When Toyota says 5,000 miles or six months

Each guide has a separate chart for special operating conditions. Toyota says that for customers who drive under those conditions, the engine oil and filter should be replaced at 5,000 miles or six months, regardless of the oil used. The guides add that these extra services are only needed if the majority of your driving is done under those conditions; occasional trips do not count.

The conditions the guides list for the oil and filter vary by model. Across the 2026 guides we read, they include:

  • Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads (every guide).
  • Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below freezing, 32°F (all but the Highlander guide).
  • Towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier or heavy vehicle loading (for example, the Corolla, Corolla Hybrid and RAV4 guides).
  • Extensive idling or low-speed driving for a long distance, such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use (for example, the Corolla, Corolla Hybrid and RAV4 guides).

If you drive in Chicago through the winter and most of your trips are short, check the special operating conditions chart in your guide. Our service advisors can help you read it.

Why your Toyota still comes in every 5,000 miles

Toyota recommends scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. The oil is only one item on the chart:

Every 5,000 miles

The charts list a tire rotation and inspections, including fluid levels, brake linings and pads, and wiper blades.

Every 10,000 miles

The engine oil and oil filter are replaced, along with the 5,000-mile items.

Miles or months

Toyota says not to wait: if you reach 5,000 miles in under six months, go at 5,000 miles; if six months pass first, go at six months.

Check your oil level once a month

Toyota's guides say it is especially important to check the engine oil level once a month and to replace the oil and filter on schedule. Toyota warns that skipping this can cause oil starvation or oil gelling, which can severely damage the engine, and that those repairs are not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

For the oil grade and viscosity your engine needs, the guides point to your Owner's Manual. Our service team uses the specification for your Toyota.

Warranty and service records

Toyota says maintenance may be done by you or by any service provider you choose, and it will not deny a warranty claim solely because you used a provider other than a Toyota dealership. Damage or failure caused by improper maintenance or repairs is not covered.

Keep a record of each service: the date, the mileage and what was done. The guides also note that a dealer may recommend more frequent maintenance than the chart lists, and that those extra services are not required to keep your warranty coverage.

Toyota oil change interval FAQ

How often does a Toyota need an oil change?

Under normal driving, the 2026 Toyota Warranty & Maintenance Guides we read (Camry, Corolla, Corolla Hybrid, RAV4, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Tacoma and Tundra) list replacing the engine oil and oil filter every 10,000 miles. If you drive mainly under the special operating conditions in your guide, Toyota says to replace them at 5,000 miles or six months, regardless of the oil used.

Is there a time limit if I do not drive much?

The Camry, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Tacoma and Tundra guides say to replace the engine oil and filter after 12 months have passed, even when the maintenance reminder does not appear. Every guide also tells low-mileage drivers to mark the calendar and get scheduled maintenance every six months.

Does a different oil change the interval?

For the special operating conditions, the guides say the 5,000-mile or six-month interval applies regardless of the oil used. For the recommended oil grade and viscosity, the guides point you to your Owner's Manual.

Why is my Toyota due at 5,000 miles if the oil is at 10,000?

Toyota recommends scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. The maintenance charts list a tire rotation and inspections at every 5,000-mile interval, with the oil and filter replaced at each 10,000-mile interval.

Do I have to use the dealer to keep my warranty?

No. The guides say maintenance may be done by you or any service provider, and Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because you used a provider other than a Toyota dealership. Damage caused by improper maintenance is not covered, so keep records of each service.
